Last night was Casino night at the Y! Thanks to resident Jayson Nakashima for being our photographer last night and snapping the fun festive action. The Annual Support Campaign is in full swing! Help support the Y and its programs and initiatives by donating today. Become a member for a day during this week, and take a tour, try a class, or just connect with your friends and family. YMCAs across Oahu will be hosting these special Open House Events during the week:
On June 1st, 36 incoming high school juniors from around the state of Hawaii packed up their bags and headed to the Atherton YMCA for a free program called Y College Camp. Y College Camp is a leadership and college access experience for Hawaii high school students from underserved populations that supports, motivates, and encourages the students to graduate and pursue higher education. During this week long experience, students from Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Molokai participated in a program of workshops, service projects, and team-building activities. They also toured the campuses of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Chaminade University, Hawaii Pacific University, and Kapiolani Community College.  Through the activities at Y College Camp, these students discovered more about themselves, experienced independent living in a college environment, and gained a better understanding of what they need to accomplish in high school to be able to attend college. Kayla Wa’ahila stated, “I want to get ready for college because I really want to be successful in life.” College student mentors also led the participants through the workshop. The mentors passed on their wisdom and provided a strong foundation of what to expect in college. This was a unique experience for the students. Vanessa Ignacio from Waiakea High School exclaimed that she would never forget it, “It was so much fun!” At the end of their journey, all students received an official letter of conditional acceptance to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Educating the Heart- Service Learning Project with Punahou Students and Alternative Spring Break02/24/2011  Mahalo to Dr. Ackerman's AP History class! What can you do with over 40 motivated Punahou High School Students and some College Students on a Satudrday Morning? Why not gather everyone for an opportunity to not only serve the Atherton YMCA , but The Salvation Army Women's Transitional Shelter in Manoa as well. Under the guidance of Board Chairman Carl Ackerman, a respected member of the Punahou faculty, 43 High School Students from Punahou joined forces with our very own Altertnative Spring Break Students to provide needed repairs and maintenace to the facilities of Atherton YMCA. Tasks included painting, labeling tools, redecorating the MAR Lounge, glass cleaning, and movement of supplies and furniture. Students were broken into teams with ASB students to accomplish each given responsibility. The teams were very focused, yet they all had fun working on common goals. The biggest blessing from the shared work was the ability to provide the Salvation Army Women's Transitional Shelter with YMCA Fitness memberships, thus allowing these single mothers the opportunity to work out and feel good about themselves. This is made possible through an Educating the Heart grant provided through the Weinberg Foundation. Mahalo to all that participated with us in this event, and we look forward to more opportunities to provide service activities for our youth. Come get involved with us! Best Week of My Life! - Laura Chua, CCY AWB 2011 Atherton is one of 20 Campus YMCAs in the United States. The Coalition of Campus Ys (CCY) is a group of student representatives from campus Ys that organize conferences and alternative breaks. Our own members Laura Chua and Maryam Palma participated in Alternative Winter Break 2011 which was held in New Orleans. Check out the January 2011 CCY Newsletter below for a full story! Last year, CCY held a student conference at Virginia Tech. Ashleigh DeBord and Sara Phillips from Atherton attended. Going forward, CCY will be holding its nect conference in May at the University of Toledo. Applications for Atherton representatives to attend will be coming out soon. Be on the lookout for this great opportunity to travel, meet other college students from around the country and Asia, and represent our Campus Y.
